Today, I think it’s fair to say that most people in this country (Ireland) and indeed, in much of the world, are concerned at how the ongoing recession is affecting and will affect our lives. I’m certainly no expert in economics, but it seems to me that we are all concerned about money, making it, borrowing it, repaying it, collecting it, etc. . . I wonder if we are overlooking a much bigger problem. . . . that is a rapidly dwindling supply of natural resources. I’m not talking about oil, although for the long term good of our planet, the sooner that one runs out, the better . ..

But all of the houshold gadgets we have come to expect and believe we are entitled to . . maybe we just cannot afford them at any price . . . maybe we need to forget about the whole idea of economic success. Instead of looking up to the person with the big house and the big car, maybe we should look up to the person with the smallest house, the bicycle, . . .

Anyway, if you have an opinion on what you think the human race should be most concerned about today, why not post it here. Supposing you were put in charge of this planet and its long term future, what would you do?

Some say that one can save a good deal of money by growing one’s own vegetables. This may be possible, but certainly not easy. This is the first year we have attempted to grow a sizable vegetable garden of our own. We invested €250 in an old tractor and about another €300 on parts getting it going. We also purchased and old plough; this cost another €200. I know that these costs will be relatively small when spread over a longer period. We also bought a cover for our polytunnell, hinges for doors. Luckily our neighbour was able to supply the frame for the tunnell as part of a barter agreement. Smaller investments included, some garden tools and of course, the all important seeds! We will try and keep track of our costs and maybe by next year, we may have a better idea as to the costs and savings. It is a real challenge to keep pests, particularly slugs and birds away from the corps, the garden demands our daily attention.
